Twenty more ecclesiastical buildings, increased local contributions, a team of clergy more than doubled, and the cathedral he built all stand as memorials of his work in Western Australia

Sub-Theme: Religion

Window erected in 1876 by Reverend P. S. Bailey is dedicated to Bishop John Coleridge Patteson.

John Coleridge Patteson (1 April 1827 - 20 September 1871) was an Anglican bishop and martyr. He was ordained in 1853 in the Church of England. His old tutor at Eton, George Augustus Selwyn, was the first Bishop of New Zealand, and he persuaded Patteson to become a missionary to the South Seas.

In 1855 Patteson set out to found the Melanesian Mission. He founded a college on Norfolk Island for native boys, toured the islands on the ship Southern Cross, and learned many of the local languages. In 1861 he was made Bishop of Melanesia.

On 20 September 1871 he was murdered on the island of Nukapu in the Solomon Islands, where he had landed alone. The explanation of his death at the time was that natives killed him as revenge for the abduction of some natives by illegal labour recruiters months earlier. These recruiters, known as "blackbirders", were considered to be virtually slave traders by members of the mission, as they enticed or abducted youths to work on plantations.

The exquisite new restored Hardman Studio window, is one of the most important nineteenth century windows in Australia.  It was designed by the leading English stained glass maker of the period, John Hardman and Co, Birmingham. The window is a memorial to Robert William Willson (1794–1866), the first Bishop of Hobart Town, and his Vicar-General, William Hall (1807–66). It is in the style of a fourteenth century Gothic window; the five lancets depict pivotal scenes from the Gospel and the tracery at the top of the window details heavenly images. A clear glass protector has been installed on the outside of the window to protect it from wind load, water damage, hailstones, and accidental breakage.

Then the newly-consecrated bishop of Hobart, Dr Robert Willson, came to London appealing for volunteer missionaries, and Hall promptly offered his services. With the bishop's party he reached Hobart Town in May 1844. Until the cessation of transportation nine years later,  Dr Willson devoted most of his attention to the cause of reform among prisoners of the Crown and the mentally ill. He therefore made Hall his vicar-general with control of diocesan administration, the vicar had wide powers which he knew how to use.

The pair of windows between the chapel and the confessionals are scenes from the life of St Joseph and were installed in 1871. One is in memory of Bishop Willson and his Vicar General, Dr William Hall, who both died in 1866 and includes their portraits. There is also a memorial window in St Mary's .

In 1842 Hobart Town was created a diocese separate from New South Wales. Willson was chosen as its chief pastor and consecrated at Birmingham on 28 October. With four missionaries chosen in England he arrived on 11 May 1844 to find two priests already in the island, churches at Richmond, Hobart and Launceston, and himself the ruler of a kingdom within a kingdom: a penal department and a body of free settlers. For the first ten years he gave his personal services almost exclusively to the penal abodes.

He therefore made Hall his vicar-general. With control of diocesan administration, the vicar had wide powers which he knew how to use.

Although the austere vicar-general made few intimate friends among his flock, he was never idle, for he attempted too much by himself. His administration for twenty-two years was very efficient. As the years rolled by a steady growth of affection and appreciation effaced the memory of uneasy beginnings until all Catholics, devout and lax, learned and unlettered, looked to Father Hall for advice and comfort.

St Saviour's became the pro-cathedral for the Diocese of Goulburn in April 1864, when Bishop Mesac Thomas arrived to take charge of his diocese. Bishop Thomas’s diocese at first comprised nearly one quarter of the State of New South Wales.

From 1871, as the diocese was beginning to get on its feet, Bishop Thomas began to think positively about a cathedral. Here, and in England, he collected £37,000 of a total of £50,000 needed for the building. Construction of the Cathedral commenced in 1874 and was completed in 1884.

Bishop Turner was nominated to the new see of Grafton and Armidale, New South Wales, and was consecrated in Westminster Abbey on 24 February 1869. With his wife Mary, he arrived in Sydney on 13 August in the Commissary and was installed at Armidale on 10 September. His see, equal in area to England and Wales, had a nominal Anglican population of about 25,000 and ten clergymen, mostly itinerant. He convened the first diocesan synod in May 1873 and in 1881 divided his diocese into two archdeaconries. The decision enabled the Grafton section to deal with some of its own affairs, but the duality expressed in the title of his diocese constituted a major problem throughout his episcopate. St Peter`s Cathedral, Armidale (1875) and Christ Church Cathedral, Grafton (1884) owe much to Turner`s continuing interest in architecture, his opposition to pretentiousness and regard for `fitness and goodness` in church building.

The new diocese covered an area of more than 125,000 square miles (320,000 km2) and there were only 14 clergymen. Tyrrell rode over much of it, working unceasingly, yet carefully reserving time every day for study and private devotions.

Marcellin was ordained a priest in France in 1816. Marcellin and a group of other seminarians had discussed forming a religious order under the patronage of Mary, the mother of Jesus. In the Chapel of Fourviére above Lyons, the day after their ordination, they dedicated themselves to her as "The Society of Mary", commonly called the Marist Fathers. His whole life between 1817 and 1840 became a crusade of rescue for poor children. He would go to any lengths and make any efforts to try to improve their situation and so that they would be open to the unconditional love of God. In 1872, at the request of the Archbishop of Sydney, the first Brothers arrived in Australia to be involved in establishing schools in the colony. When Marcellin died on June 6 1840, the order had 48 establishments in France and 278 Brothers. Today there are 5,100 Brothers working in 80 countries. He was canonised a Saint by Pope John Paul II on April 18 1999.

He is said to have ridden thousands of miles each year preaching and providing the many other services, spiritual and otherwise, required of a bush minister. He officiated at many a marriage and christening at Wellingrove and, later, at Glen Innes. The Rev. A. Cameron was Minister from 1854 until his death on the 16th May 1905 at the age of 90 years.

Patrick Francis Moran (1830–1911) was the third Roman Catholic Archbishop of Sydney. He was personally chosen and promoted by Pope Leo XIII to head the Archdiocese of Sydney — a clear policy departure from the previous English Benedictine incumbents (Polding, Vaughan) who were experiencing tension leading the predominantly Irish-Australian Catholics. Moran was appointed to Australia on the 25 January 1884 and arrived on 8 September 1884. He was created Cardinal-Priest on 27 July 1885 of the title of St Susanna. The new Irish-Australian cardinal made it his business to make his presence and leadership felt.

Over his episcopate, Moran consecrated 14 bishops (he was the principal consecrator of William Joseph Walsh, Michael Verdon, Patrick Vincent Dwyer, Armand Olier and also assisted in consecrating Patrick Clune, among others). He ordained nearly 500 priests, dedicated more than 5000 churches and professed more than 500 nuns. He made five journeys to Rome on church business between 1885 and 1903.

After his death in 1911, aged 80, a quarter of a million people (the largest crowd ever to gather in Australia until that date) witnessed his funeral procession through the centre of Sydney. He is buried in St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney.

In May 1943, Cardinal Stepinac openly criticised the Nazis and put his own life in danger. At the end of World War Two, Stepinac was found guilty of Nazi collaboration at a mock trial, by the communist government and was convicted and sentenced sixteen years` hard labour on October 11, 1946. He spent five years in the prison of Lepoglava, and in 1951, Tito`s government released him and confined him to the village of Krasic.

Even though he was forbidden by the government to resume his duties, Stepinac was named Cardinal by Pope Pius XII on January 12, 1953. Due to pain caused by the many illnesses he contracted while imprisoned, Cardinal Stepinac died in Krasic on February 10, 1960. In 1985, his trial prosecutor Jakov Blazevic admited publically that Cardinal Stepinac`s trial was entirely framed, and that Stepinac was tried only because he refused to sever thousand year old ties between Croatians and the Roman Catholic Church. On October 3, 1998 in Marija Bistrica, Pope John Paul II beatified Cardinal Stepinac, and referred to him as one of the outstanding figures of the Catholic Church.

City/Town: Yass
State: NSW
Theme: People
Sub-Theme: Religion

Bell is a tribute to the English priest Charles Lovat who was, practically speaking, the first permanent priest at Yass.

Rev Charles Lovat (Pastor of Yass 1839-1849) came, with excellent testimonials to Sydney on the 4th December 1837 on the ship "Hindoo". There he was appointed President of St Mary's College seminary. Bishop Polding called Fr. Lovat to accompany him on some missionary tours to the interior of the colony and he became known for a valuable ministry about Bathurst. He was with Bishop Polding in August 1838 when the foundation stone of St Augustine's Yass was laid. Fr Lovat was the inspiration behind the building of the original portion of old St Augustine's Church between1840-1844. Father Lovat died in 1858.

When Reverend McAlroy erected a tower in 1859 on the old St Augustine`s church built by Lovat, he initiated the idea of a bell, but the completion of the project was left to his successor Dean Hanly. When the new tower was erected in Meehan Street outside the new church in 1956, the bell was sent for repairs and erected about 1960.

Edmund Ignatius Rice was born on 1 June 1762 in Callan, Ireland, during the terrible Penal Times. Edmund was increasingly disturbed with the lot of the poor Irish Catholics. Thirteen years after his wife died, and having provided for his daughter, he sold his business and began a night school for the "quay kids" of Waterford. Edmund`s first helpers deserted him leaving him desperate, but then two men from his native Callan joined him, not only to teach but also to help Edmund found a religious order to educate poor boys. By 1825 Edmund Rice and his 30 Christian Brothers were educating, free of charge, 5,500 boys in 12 different towns and cities. Many were also being clothed and fed. In 1829 the laws of the land caught up with Edmund and he was told by the Duke of Wellington that his order existed contrary to the law. and his order faced extinction. Fortunately the Christian Brothers were not suppressed and by Edmund`s death on 29 August 1844, Christian Brothers were educating boys in Ireland, England and Australia (Sydney).

Francis Armstrong arrived in the Swan River Colony with his father, four brothers and sister on 15 Dec. 1829 aboard Gilmore from Dalkeith, Scotland. The family settled on the banks of the River Swan between Perth and Fremantle and named the locality Dalkeith after their home village in Scotland. While Francis Armstrong helped with the work associated with establishing themselves he met and befriended a number of the local natives. He felt strongly attracted to these primitive people and at once set out to learn something of their customs and dialect. The young Francis Armstrong quickly associated himself with the Tranby Methodists and helped to establish the first Methodist Society in WA. In 1841 the governor granted to the Methodists an annual subsidy of £75 to help establish a mission for the Aboriginal people on the foreshore near the Mt Eliza Bay area. It was to Francis and Mary Armstrong, that the Rev John Smithies,  the first minister of Wesley Church, turned to entrust the superintendency of this mission. He became so proficient in the language of the Aboriginal people he wrote or assisted in the writing of two books translating some of their dialects into English.

Pillars was acknowledged as an excellent preacher, but his advanced ideas split the congregation, delaying the completion of a new church building. A decline in subscriptions caused financial hardship and, in an effort to alleviate this as well as to further her own abilities, Annie began a small school with the help of her husband, teaching the daughters of their friends. On 31 July 1875 she was left to do this alone when Pillars, while on a Sunday School excursion, fell from a cliff, was swept off the rocks at Bondi and presumably drowned

Grave contains ashes and commemorates pioneer churchmen and founder of the Flying Doctor Service.

In 1912 Flynn was commissioned to undertake a survey of the needs of both the Aboriginal people and European settlers of the Northern Territory. His detailed reports resulted in the creation by the Presbyterian Church of its Australian Inland Mission (AIM), of which Flynn was appointed Superintendent. The Mission, which commenced operation with one nursing hostel, a nursing sister and a padre, had by 1926, under Flynn`s leadership, become a network of ten strategically placed nursing hostels operating closely with patrol padres. Keenly aware of the isolation of the people of inland Australia, he believed that a `mantle of safety` could be created for the isolated communities of Northern Australia only with the establishment of an aerial medical service and the introduction of radio communications. Despite many setbacks and considerable opposition, Flynn`s vision became a reality on the 17th May 1928 when the first flying doctor flew from Cloncurry to Julia Creek to answer the first call received by the AIM Aerial Medical Service.

John Flynn OBE (25 November 1880 – 5 May 1951) was an Australian Presbyterian minister who founded the Royal Flying Doctor Service, the world's first air ambulance.

Flynn was made the first superintendent of the Australian Inland Mission. As well as tending to matters spiritual, Flynn quickly established the need for medical care for residents of the vast Australian outback, and established a number of bush hospitals.

While undoubtedly most famous for the organisation that became the Royal Flying Doctor Service, Flynn's work with the Mission extended well beyond it. As well as the nursing homes, Flynn instituted travelling ministries - ministers travelling vast distances on horseback through the inland. In 1939 Presbyterian Church of Australia elected Flynn to the role of Moderator-General.

Commemorates the founder of the Methodist Church.

In 1742 Wesley published his doctrine of Christian Perfection, which provoked much debate over the next couple of centuries and Wesley`s teachings and preaching continued to attract more people. However, it also continued to upset the leaders in the Church of England. Wesley therefore came under great persecution wherever he went.During the 1750s through the 1760s, Wesley continued to build his "societies" of followers and developed schools and orphanages. His preaching and teaching took him throughout Britain, and his writings and publications were being read around the world by all social classes. Wesley wrote in such a way that the common man could understand what was being said.

This brought an understanding of God`s word to the common man, which ignited revival fires throughout the land. In 1784, Thomas Coke, a disciple under Wesley, was headed far America to oversee the "societies" there. Wesley ordained Coke and gave him a certificate as general superintendent of the Methodists in America, effectively beginning the Methodist denomination in America and formally splitting from the Church of England.

He described himself as an 'evangelical boundary rider'. He was often absent from home for long periods and annually travelled over 6000 miles (9656 km) on horseback. He baptized more than 3000 infants and joined over 800 couples in marriage. In 1865-76 he was clerk of the Presbytery of New England after the union of the Presbyterian Church in Australia. In 1882 St Paul's Church was built in Armidale.  He continued to live in the old manse after he had gained a colleague, Rev. Peter McQueen, because of his failing health. In 1894 he was awarded an honorary doctorate by the University of St Andrews. In 1903 he became Minister Emeritus. He died at Armidale on 3 February 1909.

Mary Helen MacKillop (15 January 1842 – 8 August 1909) was an Australian Roman Catholic nun who, together with Father Julian Tenison Woods, founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. Since her death she has attracted much veneration in Australia and internationally.

MacKillop is the only Australian to have been beatified (in 1995 by Pope John Paul II). On 17 July 2008, Pope Benedict XVI prayed at her tomb during his visit to Sydney for World Youth Day 2008. On 19 December 2009, Pope Benedict XVI approved the Church's recognition of a second miracle attributed to her intercession.[1] It was announced on 19 February 2010 that her canonisation is due to be formally declared on 17 October 2010,[2][3] making her the first Australian saint.[4] After her canonisation she will be known as Saint Mary of the Cross.

Statue commemorates the founder of the Loreto Sisters, Mary Ward.

Mary Ward (1585-1645), founder of Institute of the Blessed Virgin Mary (Loreto Sisters), lived in dangerous and tumultuous times. The daughter of a Catholic Yorkshire family she heard at first-hand of the experiences of English Catholics being persecuted for their faith. Her folk were from the gentry, though this did not spare them from imprisonment or surveillance. Although Mary`s family wanted to see her wedded to a suitable Catholic partner, from an early age Mary knew that she was destined for a religious vocation. This was not exactly a safe vocation in a century that had seen the suppression and expulsion of thousands from England`s monasteries and convents. Eventually Mary would set sail for Flanders where after hesitant beginnings she founded the community of women that would become known as her Institute. She was declared "Venerable" by Pope Benedict XVI on 19 December 2009; this is the first of three steps on the path to being declared a saint.

He was instrumental in the construction of that Church on its present site which necessitated a change in State legislation. The workload was too much for him and upon announcing the Hymn “All Glory, Laud and Honour” from the pulpit on Palm Sunday on 14 April 1878, he collapsed and died within hours aged 45. He added chapels at Vincent Street (1848) and Inveresk (1858) to his pastorate. Memorial tablet erected to Reverend John Gribble founder of the Warangesda Mission and Robert Ledger, the store keeper at the Mission. The tablet was installed in the Mission Church in 1893 and removed to St Pauls when the mission closed in 1925.

The Rev. John Brown Gribble, a miner who became a missionary, was deeply affected by his observation of the exploitation of Aboriginal women in the Riverina of NSW in the early 1870s. This led him to set up a dormitory for women and their children at Warangesda or 'Camp of Mercy' mission on the floodplain of the Murrumbidgee River.

Gribble decided to leave his comfortable posting at Jerilderie and in 1880 arrived at a parcel of land on the Murrumbidgee which had been revoked from lease. Despite local opposition, he was granted the reserve, given permission to establish a government school for Aboriginal children, and paid a government teacher's salary.  The name for the mission was chosen around the fireside one evening, combining "Warang" the Wiradjuri word for "camp" and "esda", the last part of the scriptural "Bethesda" (Hebrew meaning "house of mercy").

By the end of 1880, Gribble was able to write a newspaper article describing the mission. At that stage, seven houses had been built inside the ten acre mission settlement, enclosed by a post and rail fence. There were 42 Aboriginal residents, of which two thirds were said to attend the school. All of the building work had been done by the Aboriginal men

He would not accept a stipend greater than the average workers wage, gave most of his money to the poor and visited them regularly on a special reinforced bicycle to support his 6ft 4in frame. When he died, 1000 children silently lined the roadside, ex-serviemen marched in fron to the hearse, and 168 cars follwoed the procession, while 2000 people gathered at the graveside.

The cost of the full length statue was raised by public subscription and carved in white Carrara marble by an Italian sculptor using a photograph of Goble`s head and the son`s body. When the statue was delivered several people were visibly affected as the likeness was so excellent. The statue is mounted on a 8.5 ft pedestal of dressed Harcourt grey granite and decorated with red granite columns. Unveiled by the Mayor of Footscray.

In fact such was the popularity of his sermons that even after the Leura church was enlarged to twice its original size, it was often unable to accommodate the overflow congregation that flocked to his services.

Cairn erected to the memory of Silas Gill, Methodist lay preacher and Pioneer of the Macleay River.

Silas Gill was born in 1807 in Sussex, England. After receiving a rudimentary education, Silas worked as a farm labourer. As a youth he was a boxer and also a member of a party of smugglers on the coast of Kent. He was converted under the ministry of the Rev Thomas Collins in the Sandhurst Wesleyan Methodist circuit.

The British government, at the instigation of Gov Richard Bourke, introduced the 'Bounty System' of assistance to migrants to NSW in 1835. As a result, large numbers from Sussex and other counties, who had experienced extreme poverty, came to NSW. Many of these (including Gill) became lay leaders of the Methodist Church in the colony.

He moved to the Hunter River about 1845. His preaching at Woodville resulted in the establishment of a Methodist society of 30 members who were formed into two classes led by Silas and his brother, William. Shortly afterwards a chapel was erected. Silas travelled great distances to proclaim the gospel to isolated settlers. He participated in camp meetings which were characterised by hearty singing, fervent praying and powerful preaching resulting in many conversions.

Gill moved to Kempsey in 1859 and for the next 16 years he preached in many places on the Macleay River, and helped establish a number of Methodist churches. He was instrumental in building a church in Kempsey and maintained a Christian witness there for four years prior to the arrival of the first Methodist minister in 1864. He died in 1875.

Mary MacKillop and five other Sisters of St Joseph arrived in Queensland on 31 December, 1869, at the invitation of James Quinn, first Catholic bishop of Brisbane and founder of the Catholic Education system in Queensland. The Sisters offered Catholic education to the children of the working class in cities and isolated settlements according to the Woods- MacKillop system of parish-based schools.

During the next ten years the Sisters established fifteen schools and an orphanage and were teaching about half of the total number of children attending Catholic schools in the diocese. Seventy-nine Sisters had worked in the colony and of these over sixty had joined the Sisterhood in Queensland. These ten years, however, were marred by a controversy with Bishop Quinn over the Sisters style of government which placed the responsibility for the internal administration of the Sisterhood with the Sisters themselves rather than with the bishop of the diocese.

This controversy culminated with Bishop Quinn asking them to leave his diocese. By mid-July 1880 the last community of Josephites left the diocese of Brisbane. Twenty years later the Sisters of St Joseph returned to Queensland, not to Brisbane, but to a country town, Clermont, in the newly formed diocese of Rockhampton. In a letter to all the Sisters, Mary MacKillop shared her happiness: ' I am glad to think the Sisters will be back in dear old Queensland once more '. Between 1902 and 1915 five more schools were opened in the diocese.
