The plaque commemorates the first Bishop of Perth, Mathew Blagden Hale (1811 - 1895).
Bishop Hale was opposed to the erection of a cathedral due to the fact that Perth was in his time a very small town and he felt strongly that they would not be in a position to erect a worthy building. The old Cathedral was opened in 1845 and served until 1888 when the present St Georges Cathedral was opened. Bishop Hale was transferred to Brisbane, Queensland in 1875.
