The marble plaque commemorates Edward James Matthie, an Elder, Treasurer and Sabbath School Superintendent of the Presbyterian Church, Coburg who died in 1898.
Death Notice. MATTHIE.—On the 27th December, 1898, at his late residence, Sydney-road, Coburg, James Matthie, formerly of Greenock, Scotland,aged 74 years, for 40 years an officer of the Penal department, a founder of the Presbyterian Church, Coburg, and a colonist of 44 years' standing.
