Reverend James LyallPrint Page
The marble plaque commemorates Reverend James Lyall (1827 - 1905) was the Minister of the Flinders Street congregation from September 1857 to January 1898.
Plaques to him and his wife in the Scots Church, North Terrace, Adelaide, were moved there when the Flinders Street Church was demolished.
Born in 1827, at Edinburgh, Scotland, he studied at the Universities of Edinburgh and Glasgow, and at the Divinity Hall, United Presbyterian Church, in the latter city. He was engaged for about ten years in mission work in Edinburgh. He arrived in South Australia in 1857, where he took charge of the Presbyterian Church in Gouger-street, and afterwards in Flinders-street, in 1875. In June, 1884, Mr. Lyall, who had acted as Honourable Clerical Secretary to the Adelaide City Mission for a number of years, resigned that office, in consequence of "heavy domestic affliction, and the paramount duties of his pastorate and Presbytery," requiring his constant attention.
