Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillopPrint Page
The monument commemorates Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop, educationalist and co-founder of the Sisters of St Joseph.
Mary Helen MacKillop, also known as St. Mary of the Cross, R.S.J., was an Australian Roman Catholic Religious Sister who, together with the Rev. Julian Tenison Woods, founded the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart. This religious congregation went on to establish a number of schools and welfare institutions throughout Australasia, with an emphasis on education for the poor, particularly in rural areas.
She was canonized on 17 October 2010 during a public ceremony in St Peter's Square at the Vatican. She is the only Australian to be recognised by the Roman Catholic Church as a saint.
