The tombstone erected by the North Queensland Racing Association commemorates Robert Russell founder of the Association and Secretary of the Towers Jockey Club who died in 1910.

In 1878, Robert Russell was appointed Secretary of the Towers Jockey Club a position he held until his death. He was also instrumental in forming the North Queensland Racing Association in 1885 and held the position of Chairman for 12 years.

He was a keen politician and was elected Mayor of Charters Towers three times.
