Purtell Park was named in honour of Tom Purtell, a former football player and for a period of 45 years a sporting official.

Tom Purtell was a 1932 and 1936 Wests premiership rugby league player, a 1935 / 36 state representative, club official, Wests life member in 1944, and presided over the club for 20 years.
