The monument commemorates sailors of the windjammers.
The last square rigger to leave Port Victoria was the "Pamir". She left on the 1st June 1949, carrying 56,681 bags of wheat. When she sank in 1957 it was decided to erect a memorial to old sailors. Port Victoria was the last port in Australia to load a windjammer.
Note: A windjammer is a commercial sailing ship with multiple masts that may be either square rigged or fore-and-aft rigged or a combination of the two. The informal term arose during the transition from the Age of Sail to the Age of Steam.
