The monument, featuring a bas relief sculpture, commemorates the first flight in Australia by George Augustine Taylor in a heavier-than-air flying machine at Narrabeen Heads.
George Augustine Taylor (1872 – 1928) was an Australian artist, journalist, and inventor. In December 1909 at Narrabeen Beach, he made the first heavier-than-air free flight in Australia. Taylor`s aeroplane was unpowered relying on the wind for its lift. Three men and two women, including Taylor`s wife Florence, made a total of 29 flights, travelling perhaps 100 to 250 metres along the foreshore.
