The plaque commemorates 100 years of publication of the Kiama Independent on the site.
The Kiama Independent was first published on the 7th July 1863 at a site in Morton Street, and was moved to the present location on the 28th August 1883. The Kiama Independent has been published by the Weston Family since its inception.
The Weston family sold the paper to Southern Independent Publishers in 2005. Fairfax Media bought the Kiama Independent and Lake Times in 2010.
