The tombstone erected by the family and Queenton Rangers Football Club commemorates William Smith who was killed in the Brilliant Central Mine, Charters Towers in 1895.
William Smith was a well-known athlete and prominent member of the Queenton Rangers Football team. On the 30th September 1895, William died when a loaded skip snapped its cable and plunged 900 feet to where three miners were working crushing William and seriously injuring another man who later died of his injuries. The third man was virtually unscathed.

Sacred to the memory of William Smith,
Born at Largoward Kilconquhar (parish) Fifeshire Scotland, on the 28th January 1866.
Accidentally killed in the Brilliant Central Mine, Charters Towers 30th September, 1895.
Erected by his parents, Alexander Kay Smith and Catherine Smith, his brother`s and sister`s, also the members of the Queenton Rangers Football Club.
A sudden change - at God's command he fell
He had not time to bid his friends farewell,
The summons came without a warning given
That made him haste to meet his God in heaven.
