The tombstone commemorates Allan Ross who was accidentally killed when he fell down a mine shaft in 1897.

Allan Ross was a prominent athlete and footballer who was killed on New Years Day 1897 when he fell from No 9 platform to No 10 shaft a distance of 30 feet. He was 26 years old.

Accidentally killed through falling down Mills United Mine.

1st January 1887.

Aged 26 years.

This monument is erected by his sisters and brothers, also members of the Football Club, his workmates and friends as a token or respect.

As the ivy cling to the oak,
So our hearts cling to thee.
