The fountain commemorates construction engineer Alfred Thomas who worked on the first railway line to Toowoomba in the 1870s.
Thomas retired from the civil service in 1879 and in a partnership with John Garget built the railways south from Toowomba to Stanthorpe and west from Toowoomba to Warwick. In 1882 while returning to Toowomba by ship from Sydney he fell overboard in Sydney harbour and was drowned. Alfred Thomas and his family were highly respected members of the Toowomba community.
