To commemorate the tragic deaths by drowning in the Murrumbidgee River on the 8th Decr 1899 of Privates Jeremiah Mead and William Sunderland of the Yass. F. Coy. 1st Infantry Regt. N. S. W. Military Forces, and John Joseph Davis and Edward Bede Kiley of the N. S. W. Public School Cadet forces, the two former having nobly lost their lives in a brave attempt to rescue their companions,
