The crows nest from the vessel, the "Austral Eagle" commemorates the people who have died at sea in waters off Smoky Bay .

Smoky Bay Progress Association has erected this Crows Nest in memorial to all those that have lost their loves at sea in the waters of Smoky Bay

Austral Eagle

This Crows Nest was originally of the fishing vessel "Austral Eagle"

Austral Eagle was built in 1978 for David (Joe) Bec in Ballina NSW by Bob Mc Laren
Dimensions L 56.5 ft long
18ft beam
7ft draught

The boat was built for crayfishing and shark fishing in the Great Australian Bight from Kangaroo Island SA to Esperance WA

This crows nest was donated to the District council of Ceduna by Dino Retsas who owned the vessel from 1985 to 2007

1971  Barry Salmon  
Died as a result of an explosion and a boat at Smoky Bay on 23 / 6 / 1971, the 27 year old tried to swim ashore.

1980 Brian Herbert Nash

41 year old Brian and his 14 yr old son Michael from Port Augusta drowned several kms south west of Smoky Bay jetty on 26 / 5 / 1980 following a boating accident

1986 Stanley Koko
49 year old Stanley accidentally drowned at Smoky Bay on 6 / 3 / 1986

1989 Barry Dewsett
Barry drowned as a result of a boating accident at Smoky Bay on 2 / 10 / 1989

2002 Paul Buckland
23 year old Paul, a diver was taken by a shark west of Smoky Bay on 30 / 4 / 2002

2008 Rees Bryant
28 year old Rees lost his life in a freak accident whilst working on board the prawn trawler "Lincoln Lady" on 31 / 10 / 2008 near Franklin Island
