The monument over the grave was erected by the Northern Branch of the New South Wales Rugby Football League, in memory of Ernest "Peano" Jones who was accidently killed during the construction of the Hamilton Gas Works on the 9th April 1912 at the age of 23.
He was a well known rugby league player and cricketer in the Newcastle District.
