George WilkinsonPrint Page
The monument erected by early residents commemorates pioneer storekeeper George Wilkinson who came to the Arltunga goldfields in 1896 as a book-keeper. He managed, and later bought, the Wallis store in Alice Springs.
He was a great friend of the bush people and had an avid interest in town affairs. He was Honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Australian Inland Mission from its Alice Springs formation in 1916 until 1926 when the hostel was built. He died in 1933.
