The tree commemorates John Hector Argus (1900 - 1998) who was a pioneer of the area. The tree was planted on the 100th anniversary of his birth.  It is unknown if the tree planted is still living.

John Hector Argus was a legendary prospector in the goldfields north of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia. In 1924 he was elected to the Kalgoorlie Roads Board, Broad Arrow Ward, serving until 1927. He loved music and was a fiddle player. He lived in a large house in Ora Banda. He spent a lot of time in a structure in his backyard, which he called The Opera House. The Opera House had most of the home comforts of an old style prospector - a wood burning stove, a rudimentary kitchen and a chair.
