The plaque commemorates Matthew Smillie who was the founder of Nairne in 1839.

Matthew Smillie, who founded Nairne in 1839, was born in Leith, the port of Edinburgh, Scotland in 1781. He emigrated to Australia, with his second wife Elizabeth Corse Nairne Smillie, after whom he named the town. He purchased 4000 acres of land, which he used to establish the first sheep farm on the eastern face of the Mount Lofty ranges and built his home The Valleys, near Nairne, in 1844.
