The shrine commemorates Father J.J. Malone who was parish priest at the church from 1919 to 1948.
The Rev Father J. J. Malone, parish priest at SS Peter and Paul's, Geelong, died at the Mercy Hospital, East Melbourne, yesterday morning, aged 84. Most of his 59 years in the priesthood were spent in Victoria. He was born at Kildare, Ireland, and studied at Maynooth College, Dublin, and the Royal University of Ireland.He was ordained in 1889.
Father Malone was instrumental in erecting many parochial buildings during his life, and he had published a number of books and poems. After Solemn Office and Requiem Mass at St Mary's, Geelong, at 10.30 on Monday the funeral will leave for the Eastern Cemetery.
