The park commemorates Private Ernest Grant who was killed during the Battle of Long Tan in 1966 during the Vietnam War. 

Private Grant, 20, a farm hand from Thurgoona, was among 17 members of Delta Company, 6th Battalion, Royal Australian Regiment, killed fighting communist Vietnamese forces on August 18, 1966.  Private Grant, a Regular Army enlistee, was one of 14 soldiers from the Albury-Wodonga district who died in Vietnam.

Front Inscription

Ernest Grant Park is dedicated to the memory of Private Ernest Francis Grant of Thurgoona.

Killed in action on 18 August 1966, Aged 20, during the Battle of Long Tan in the Vietnam conflict 1962 - 1972.

This plaque was unveiled by his father, Gordon Grant, Esq. on 16 August 1987
