The granite obelisk with a helmet and crossed swords on a tablet commemorates Lieutenant James Charles Roberts, Victorian Mounted Rifles, who died of wounds at Rensburg, South Africa in 1900.
He is also remembered in Royal Park , Melbourne where he lived as a boy.
The memorial was unveiled by Colonel Price on the 28th February 1901 in the presence of 60 members of B Company of the Victorian Mounted Rifles and about 150 school children. Colonel Price delivered an eulogiam on the soldier and Messrs Mason and Kennedy MLA's and Mr E. J. Gregory, Chairman of the memorial fund also spoke. At the conclusion of the ceremony the children sang "God Save the King".
