The Alexander Gates were erected to commemorate Private Alexander William Eagleton who was killed in action in the South African (Boer) War.  

DUNGOG, Tuesday. The memorial gates and a tablet in the Clarence Town park, erected to the memory of the late Trooper Alexander Eagleton, who was shot in South Africa, were officially opened yesterday by the Hon W. Bennett, member for the district.
