The plaque was erected in memory of Staff Nurse Elizabeth Rothery (1885 - 1918) who served as a nurse in World War One. The plaque is also in remembrance of the 63 Ovens Valley Nurses who also served.
During World War One Nurse Rothery served for five months at Bagthorpe Military Hospital, Nottingham, England, and died of appendicitis and peritonitis on 15th June 1918.
She is buried in the Beechworth Cemetery.

This bronze is in honour & remembrance of
her dedicated service as a WW1 staff nurse,
In theatres of war and on transport ships carrying
wounded Australian soldiers back to Australia during
the First World War.
We also remember with gratitude, the 63 local Ovens Valley
Nurses who also served their Country.
Appreciation to the Victorian State Government for their
generous assistance along with the RSL Nurses Association
& the Alpine Shire Council.
