Wounded in action
Japanese Prisoner of War in Sumatra
February 1942 - September 1945
"The ship `Vyner-Brooke`, was bombed by Japanese aircraft two
days after the fall of Singapore and sank off Banka Island, in the
Straits of Sumatra. Twelve Australian nurses who were on board
drowned. One party of twenty-two reached land in a lifeboat.
After killing the men in the party, the Japanese ordered the nurses
to wade knee-deep into the sea and machine-gunned them down;
killing all but one, Lt Vivian Bullwinkle.
Lt Muir`s group unsuccessfully attempted escape by raft,
using an oar for a mast, and torn uniforms for a sail.
In attempt to evade Japanese capture, Lt Muir was protected and oft
hidden by a British Commando before he was captured and shot.
At the end of WWII, Lt Muir and her party were found wandering
in the jungle by an RAAF pilot.
Of the sixty-five nurses on the `Vyner-Brooke` , 24 returned home."
"Lest We Forget their contribution."
