Two plaques, erected on either side of the Seville Primary School gates, commemorate Captain George Mawby Ingram, a former pupil of the school who was awarded the Victoria Cross and Military Medal during World War One.

The Victoria Cross
On October 5th 1918, Lt George Ingram of Seville was with the 24th Battalion in the attack on Montbrehain in France.
Under intense fire he led a charge that overcame a heavily defended quarry, capturing a number of enemy machine-gun posts and soldiers. Throughout the battle he set an inspiring example of bravery and leadership to those around him regardless of the danger.
For his actions here he was awarded the highest medal for valour in the Australian Armed Forces: The Victoria Cross, the
last to be awarded to an Australian in World War One.

GEORGE INGRAM WAS BORN IN 1889 NEAR
BENDIGO AND GREW UP IN SEVILLE WHERE
HE AND HIS TWO BROTHERS ATTENDED THE
SEVILLE STATE SCHOOL. DURING THE FIRST
WORLD WAR HE SERVED IN NEW GUINEA
WITH THE 3RD BATTALION AND THEN IN
EUROPE WITH THE 24TH BATTALION WHERE
HE WAS AWARDED THE MILITARY MEDAL
AND THE VICTORIA CROSS. BOTH HIS
BROTHERS WERE KILLED IN THE WAR. HE
RETURNED HOME TO SEVILLE IN 1919 TO A
HERO`S WELCOME AND WAS EVENTUALLY
TO BECOME ONE OF THE ORIGINAL SHRINE
OF REMEMBRANCE GUARDS. THIS MADE HIM
THE MOST DECORATED VICTORIAN POLICE
OFFICER. HE ALSO SERVED IN WORLD WAR
TWO AND DIED IN HASTINGS (VIC) IN 1961.
