The mural commemorates Sergeant Albert Ernest Lock who died of wounds during World War One.  After the war, the town of Lock was named in honour Sergeant Lock who had been an officer of the Land Office, Department of Lands, South Australia.

It is believed to be the only town in Australia named after a soldier who died in service in World War One.

A clerk with civil engineering training prior to enlistment, Corporal Lock embarked from Melbourne on HMAT Aeneas on 3 October 1916. After being promoted to the rank of sergeant he died of wounds on 9 October 1917, aged 30, at Passchendaele, Belgium.
