The gates of district hospital commemorate pioneer nurses Catherine and Elizabeth Hoare for their nursing service and the the achievements and dedication of nursing in the district.
Catherine and Elizabeth Hoare conducted a private hospital for many years, and were known affectionately as Nurse Kitty and Sister Lizzie. After their retirement the hospital became a bush nursing hospital and when the Donald District hospital was built the opportunity to honour them was taken. Catherine died in 1939 and Elizabeth in 1963.
