The monument commemorates prospector Frank Long ( 1842 - 1908) who was born in Campbell Town. Long discovered silver, lead and zinc in Zeehan.
Frank Long discovered silver lead (Galena) on the banks of Pea Soup Creek in 1882, near the present day site of Zeehan. It led to the largest mining boom on Tasmania`s west coast with Zeehan being dubbed the `Silver City of the West` and, within a decade, Zeehan growing to become the third largest town in Tasmania. This is hardly surprising. Long`s first samples had yielded 70 ounces of silver per ton.
As of January 2014, the original shovels that were on the monument have disappeared.

Dedication
A tribute to Frank Long who was born in Campbell Town, 1st August 1842.
He was one of the most experienced prospectors of the 1870`s and discovered silver-lead at Zeehan, 8th December 1882.
Died 9th December 1908
Aged 66 years
