The headstone at the grave commemorates William Morris Jones who died in 1934 at the age of 83. It was erected by the Newcastle Coal Miners Branch of the Waterside Workers Federation.

The funeral of Mr. William Morris Jones left his late residence, Rodger Street Carrington, on July 8 for the Church of England Cemetery, Sandgate. Mr Jones was 83 years of age, and a native of Liverpool, England. He came to Australia as a young man, and followed the occupation of a coal trimmer for nearly 50 years retiring in 1922. His pall-bearers at the funeral were some of his old workmates of the Coaltrimmers` Union, Messrs W. Christensen, C. Pearce, Jno Busby and C.H. Hughes.

Note: Coal trimmers were the waterside workers who loaded coal as cargo and into bunkers on steam ships. The union became the Newcastle Coal Trimmers Branch of the Waterside Workers' Federation in 1921.
