The clock in the tower of the old Town Hall commemorates the reign of Queen Victoria.
Victoria (24 May 1819 – 22 January 1901) was Queen of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland from 20 June 1837 until her death. From 1 May 1876, she adopted the additional title of Empress of India. With a reign of 63 years, seven months and two days, Victoria was the longest -reigning British monarch and the longest-reigning queen regnant in world history until her great-great-granddaughter Queen Elizabeth II surpassed her on 9 September 2015.
Queen Victoria`s birthday, 24th May, used to be called `Empire Day`. There were special assemblies at school with songs praising the British Empire. Children were then given a half-day holiday. Up to the 1950s, Empire Day was celebrated in Australia with huge bonfires and fireworks.
The Deniliquin Council, at its sitting on Monday night, received a letter from Mr. Alex. Landale, of Wandook Station, stating that the writer's son, Captain George Landale, of the 3rd (King's Own) Hussars, wished to donate a clock for the Town-hall providing that it would be accepted, the clock to be approved of by the Council. The idea of the donation was for the purpose of establishing a memorial of the late Queen Victoria. The town and district are to be congratulated upon having such a thorough gentleman in their midst. The name of Landale is ever to the fore in assisting in charity or any movement that may bo started for the welfare of the district.
Riverine Herald (Echuca, Vic. : Moama, NSW), 19 December 1903.
A Deniliquin correspondent writes to say that the town clock presented to the council was handed over in the presence of a large number of citizens this week. The Mayor (Alderman Jones) on behalf of the residents, accepted the present from Captain Landale's father, Mr. A. Landale, of Wandook. Mrs Landale and her daughters entertained the gathering at afternoon tea.
