The sculpture commemorates Dr Arnold Cook and his guide dog Dreena.

Dr Arnold Cook who became totally blind at the age of 18 years, pioneered the famous guidedog movement in Australia. Arnold heard about the Guide Dog Association in Britain and applied for a dog. He was accepted and trained with Dreena, a black Labrador bitch. In 1950 Dr Arnold Cook, returned home with his Guide Dog, the first in Australia. A year later the first Guide Dog Association in Australia was formed in Perth.

In 1950 he brought the first guide dog for the blind to Australia and developed a Guide Dogs for the Blind society in Victoria Park.  This is now known as Guide Dogs WA and is part of VisAbility, formerly the Association for the Blind of WA.
