The Fountain commemorates the life of Mrs Elizabeth Cook (1742-1835), wife of the famous navigator Captain James Cook. The fountain is believed to be the only monument in the world dedicated to Captain Cook's wife and is a monument to her formidable courage and character. The fountain was donated by the Sutherland Shire's Bicentenary Women's Committee.
Elizabeth Cook, who, when she died in Clapham at the age of 93 years in May 1835, had outlived her husband, all of her children, and most of her friends and relatives. She lived in virtual widowhood throughout most of her married life because her husband spent most of their marriage at sea.
