The cairn commemorates the crossing of the Burke River by Burke and Wills in 1861. It also commemorates Eli Vallis, the first white man to set foot in Boulia around 1876. The cairn was unveiled during the official opening of the Boulia Caravan Park in 1968.
Boulia is located on the Burke River, which was named by the explorers Burke and Wills on their journey through the area in 1860. He named the nearby Wills River after his second in command.
