James Cook Statue Detail

The statue commemorates explorer and navigator Captain James Cook. It was donated by BP Australia in 1988 to the people of Cooktown as a bicentennial gift.
Captain James Cook claimed the whole of the east coast of Australia for Great Britain on 22 August 1770, naming eastern Australia, 'New South Wales.'

Commander H.M.B. "Endeavour" which was beached and repaired near this site 17 June - 4 August, 1770
"He left nothing unattempted".
This statue was commissioned by BP Australia as a Bicentennial gift to the people of Cooktown and unveiled by Mr. A. W. Gorrie Chairman of the Board,
Saturday, 25 June 1988.
