A gentleman well versed in natural history. 

Observer for the Royal Society aboard H. M. barque "Endeavour".

This plaque commemorates the 200th anniversary of the landing of Mr. Joseph Banks on Bare Island during his visit to  Botany Bay with Lieutenant James Cook in 1770.

Extract from Banks Journal, 30th April, 1770 :

"Myself in the even landed on a small island on the northern side of the bay to search for shells.
