M2A2 105 Millimetre Howitzer
A general purpose light field artillery gun which consists of a barrel, recoil mechanism and carriage. This howitzer could be towed by truck, lifted by helicopter or moved manually for short distances. It was easily adjustable to target and could project force over an 11km radius with accuracy.
Made in the USA and Canada in the 1950`s, this type of gun has been a vital component of Australia` military arsenal.
It was the standard artillery gun used by most field regiments of the Royal Australia Artillery (RAA) during the Vietnam War and became the main protection our soldiers had there.
They were critical in providing close artillery fire support to the Australian Army in Vietnam including invaluable support in the Phouc Tuy Province from 1967 and in a fire support role at Fire Support Base Coral, Bien Hoa Province, during the Battle of Coral in 1968.
All Australian patrols sent into enemy territory were supported by the artillery and they became an integral part of battalion operations. These howitzers helped, Australian, US and New Zealand troops clear an area that had previously been dominated by enemy forces for more than seven years.
