The seat designed and crafted by the Glasshouse Country Men’s Shed was erected in memory of Peter Kluver and Maree Rau. It is made from local tallowwood sourced from and treated at the Peachester Sawmill. The seat is secured in a concrete slab, and attached to the seat are two plaques representing the two individuals the seat commemorates.
The seat was initiated and overseen by a local environment group, Glasshouse Mountains Advancement Network Inc (GMAN), in memory of two members, Peter Kluver and Maree Rau, good mates who passed away within two months of each other. GMAN is a voluntary organisation that has worked towards making our community an environmentally safe and beautiful place to work and play for over 3 decades.
Peter Kluver and Maree Rau were staunch advocates of the Glasshouse Mountains and surrounding area, promoting and nurturing native plant life and wildlife habitat. Serving on GMAN’s Management Committee, they were instrumental in securing grants and co-ordinating projects to preserve and protect the ecology and cultural heritage of this region.
Peter Kluver, quiet but practical, was involved in all GMAN projects including the establishment of koala food tree plantations and their subsequent maintenance. He served for many years on the Management Committee and held the position of Vice President at the time of his death. Peter actively volunteered in other local groups including the Glasshouse Mountains Men’s Shed, which he was instrumental in creating; the RSL; Coochin Creek Bushland Group and the Glasshouse Mountains Visitor Centre. Peter was granted Life Membership for both the Men’s Shed and the RSL, and in 2015 was honoured with a Volunteer Award by MP Andrew Powell, demonstrating the high regard in which he was held by friends, colleagues and associates.
Maree Rau was a networker who enjoyed making connections between people from different groups. As well as being an active member of GMAN, she was also involved with the local VIEW club. Maree helped organise and participated in many GMAN projects including the native plant propagation nursery, the koala food tree plantations and all fundraisers. Maree served as secretary for both GMAN and the VIEW club for several years before her illness forced her to resign this position.
The memorial seat is located at Beerburrum trailhead and is much used by hikers and locals. It serves as a practical reminder of these two individuals, reflecting their contribution to the local community.
