The memorial over the grave commemorates William Clendenning for his services to the Muswellbrook community. Mr Clendenning who was a former councillor and Mayor of Muswellbrook died in 1901.
It was with feelings of deep regret that we learnt this morning of the sudden death of Mr William Clendenning, one of Muswellbrook's foremost citizens. The sad event took place about six o'clock this morning, and was, from what we can learn, as sudden as it was unexpected. Some time back, he was unwell but appeared to have pulled through the illness and got well again; and there was nothing in his health to give occasion for alarm during the past few days. The cause of death was syncope. The deceased will be much missed in Muswellbrook.
He put in many years in the local Municipal Council, and filled the Mayoral chair, and besides was active worker on the Show committee, and many other institutions in the town. He was, in fact, a striking personality, a man of more than average natural ability; but of fiery temperament and outspoken to a fault, it was only natural he should at times have found himself a central figure in stormy places, and a prominent target of those from whom he differed. This is always the case of men holding emphatic views, and emphatically expressing them. But deceased was a man of large heart, and of most generous impulses, and had troops of friends. He at one time contested the Upper Hunter. He was 68 years of age.
