The bridge over the Hacking River was renamed and dedicated after Joan Holland who was president of the Bundeena Progress Association and campaigned for an all-weather road crossing of the river. Her efforts were finally fulfilled when the bridge was opened in 1993. Before then, Bundeena's road access was often cut off in wet weather by floods.

Her daughter, Bronwyn Holland, a Program Director of Women in Engineering and lecturer in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Technology, Sydney, organized the bridge re-naming ceremony on 30 September 2004.  The bridge was designed by Sue Lothringer, formerly of the Road and Traffic Authority.
