Dame Joan SutherlandPrint Page
The walkway was named in honour of Dame Joan Sutherland as the patron of the Festival of Mosman.
Dame Joan graced the stages of all the world`s great opera houses, and sung in nearly sixty different opera roles. In 1975, the diva`s outstanding contribution to opera was recognised when she was made a Dame in the Queen`s New Year`s honours List. Dame Joan`s stage career of more than forty years ended on New Year`s Eve, 1990.
She had decided to retire before her treasured voice declined with age. Her farewell performances drew packed audiences, first in Sydney, and later to the theatre where her dream came true, Covent Garden.
