Taroom Pioneers Memorial Plaque

The monument commemorates the early residents of Taroom.
Early settlers to Taroom came from the New England and Hunter River areas of New South Wales, and took up land in 1845, only one year after the explorer Leichhardt travelled through on his epic journey north. At first the settlers tried to graze sheep, but soon cattle grazing became the main industry, with grain growing and timber becoming important as well.
