This tree commemorates Maroochy Shire's part in the Bicentennial National Chain of Beacons. It was planted in the ashes of Maroochy's beacon one of hundreds in a chain commencing at sunset at Botany Bay, encircling Australia and returning to Botany Bay at sunrise.

A large gathering of citizens took part in the Maroochy beacon at 5.50 am on Sunday 19 June 1988 as one of the links in the largest chain of beacons in world history.
