Old Elsey StationPrint Page
The cairn commemorates the site of the Old Elsey Station Homestead, made famous by the pioneering adventures of the characters portrayed in the book "We Of The Never Never" written by Mrs. Aeneas Gunn who was mistress of the station. The cairn was erected as a tribute by the Nursing Sisters of the Australian Inland Mission.
Elsey Station is a pastoral lease that once operated as a cattle station in the Northern Territory. Aeneas and Jeannie Gunn arrived at Elsey in 1902, Gunn owned a quarter share in the property but died there in 1903 from Blackwater fever. Jeannie returned to Melbourne and in 1908 wrote the book We of the Never Never based on her time at Elsey.
