The cairn commemorates the pioneers of Lara. The cairn was unveiled in 1938 by the Minister for Water Supply, Mr Old.

A further plaque honours Matthew Flinders for whom the road here was renamed Flinders Avenue in 1974, the bicentenary of his birth.
