Historic bridges of New South Wales

Echuca - Moama Bridge of Murray River

Starting a punt service about 1853, Henry Hopwood soon opened a floating bridge, having ten timber bowstring spans on iron pontoons and movable sections to let vessels through.

Built by Walker and Halliday of Carlton, Vic, to link NSW and Victorian rail lines, this bridge was completed in December 1878.

Crowds thronged onto it on 1 January 1901 to celebrate Federation and after patriotic processions from both sides, exchange greetings under a triumphal arch.

Erected to celebrate Australia`s Bicentenary in 1988 by the Department of Main Roads and the National Roads & Motorists` Association (N.R.M.A.)
