The monument commemorates the proclamation of the Town of Barmera in 1921 and honours the pioneer settlers who contributed to the progress of the town in the first fifty years. An additional plaque was placed on the monument in 2021 to commemorate the town`s centenary.

An irrigation system was established in the town in 1921. The town became gazetted. An influx of World War One veterans settled with promises of irrigated land from the government.
