Pioneer Women of South AustraliaPrint Page
The Pioneer Women’s Trail commemorates the early German pioneer women settlers from Hahndorf who supplied Adelaide with fresh produce at a time when most foodstuffs had to be imported into South Australia.
The trail is approximately 26 kilometres long and mainly follows country roads, lane ways and bush tracks through a section of the Adelaide Hills. Commencing at Verdun, the trail winds through Bridgewater, following Cox Creek part of the way. After traversing the Mount George Conservation Park the trail detours through Stirling. It continues through Crafers and Cleland Conservation Park, before joining the Old Bullock Track, finally to the descent to Beaumont House in Burnside.

History
The Pioneer Women’s Trail honours the early European settlers who supplied Adelaide with fresh produce at a time when most foodstuffs had to be imported into South Australia.
The British colony was barely two years old when three sailing ships arrived carrying Lutheran refugees from Prussia eager to build new lives from persecution.
The sympathetic captain of the "Zebra", Dirk Meinertz Hahn, helped fifty-four Lutheran families to establish a farm village in the picturesque Onkaparinga River valley near Mount Barker.
Within weeks the women and girls carrying baskets of vegetables and dairy products on their backs or on yokes across their shouldsers, left the village at midnight to walk the rough bush track to Adelaide 35km away.
