The cairn commemorates the centenary of the township of Cunliffe from 1879 to 1979.

The township of Cunliffe located in Yorke Peninsula's Copper Coast was formed in 1879 and was a large thriving community for many years with a school and shops. Today the church and tennis courts are still regularly used.
