The cairn was erected as a project to commemorate the bicentenary of Australia in 1988. 

The Bicentenary marked the 200th anniversary of the arrival of the First Fleet in Sydney in 1788. Captain Arthur Phillip (1738–1814), commander of the First Fleet, established the foundations of a British colony at Sydney Cove on the 26 January 1788.

Mt Buninyong is an extinct volcanic mountain 719 metres (2451 Feet) A.S.L.

It lies within the territory of the Kulin Tribe of Aborigines.

The first European explorers reached the summit in 1837. The first settlers in the District were the Learmonth Brothers in 1838.

This cairn was unveiled by Cr Gerry Mullane (a descendant of a pioneer family) on Australia Day, 1988.

An Australian Bicentennial Project with financial assistance from the Federal Government.
